A few links
When does parody become reality? This guy is going on my blogroll! Which reminds me, I'm keeping AS on for now just because he seems to have returned to sanity (i.e. putting Democrats into office will not automatically make them Republicans on defense) since the election. Somewhat, anyway.
Again with Jim Treacher, the ultimate commentary on Eminem.
I'll be collecting the quotes and posting them, but until then, see why Jeff Goldstein thinks we shouldn't gloat.
A priceless comment from Mark Steyn, also on my blogroll: "On the morning of Nov. 2, the condescending left were convinced that Bush was an idiot. By the evening of Nov. 2, they were convinced that the electorate was. Or as London's Daily Mirror put it in its front page: "How Can 59,054,087 People Be So DUMB?" ... Well, they're British lefties: They can do without Americans. Whether an American political party can do without Americans is more doubtful."
Okay, okay, I'm done now. No more blogging tonight!

Holy Crap...
Okay, so I just went through the Little Green Footballs thread about crazy liberal reactions, and I already have 6 pages of quotes. Here goes:
Daily Kos comments:
What happened to Kerry the fighter? What happened to making sure every vote is counted? Why do I feel like it's germany in the 1930s and I'm watching the party rise to power again?
Second, gut any Bush hopes for legitimacy. Find the places in Florida and Ohio and every other state where a plausible argument for Republican vote fraud can be made. It doesn't matter whether it did happen or not. What matters is if it can be plausibly alleged to marginal Bush supporters and to the media … We have to make him "Bush the only American President who was never elected" whether it's true or not.
We must count EVERY vote. We must protest EVERY vote. We must litigate EVERY vote. We must audit EVERY vote. And we must do this EVERY day for the next 4 years. Even if it shuts down the whole government, ESPECIALLY if it shuts down the whole government.
I say f**k the swing voters.
ya gotta love that ol' time religion! You just KNOW that the fundies will now be completely calling the shots, helllooo Torqamada !
We failed to heed Osama's warning, and we will pay for it, I fear.
This is the Revenge of the Confederacy here folks. Don't for a second think they forgot about getting their butts kicked in 1865.
i'm seriously considering leaving before they close the borders
Indymedia comments:
I'm going to shit my pants, move to Ethiopia and do Payoti for the next 4 years. We gotta riot tomorrow. Organized, structured, pointed riots. Or else we're all fucked.
It's hard to feel bad about Sep. 11 when you people put this monster back into office.
Bush is the most hated man in history.
this is the birth of the american terrorist. we will now fight back. by all means necessary...
You knew that they were going to steal the election again. You know that the election was decided somewhere in a back room then scripted by corpy media.
Democratic Underground comments:
F**k this bunch of holy rollers. Religion is EVIL.
rednecks & holy rollers are the new brownshirts. Stupidity is a badge of honor to them....same goes for destroying the environment, killing forigners, bowing down to authority.
Don't tell some high altitude electronic warfare aircraft weren't flying missions yesterday to electronically alter the vote! The CIA has been doing this for decades to change the votes in central and South America…Let the right wing religious zionist christian fundamentalist choke on their gluttony for oil in the deserts of Arabia. The muslums will avenge the rape of their soil with the blood of these jew loving christian wackos!
We tried. We really tried. In record numbers, but the fix was in before we ever went to cast our votes to rid the world of these demons from the bowels of hell…We must put our pens to paper and tell [the world] that the election was stolen and we did NOT elect these people.
Then last night we found out the Taliban ARE the people [of America]. Bush and co. were usually open in their barbaric, discriminatory beliefs - and the people DID see and LIKED what they saw
BBC Comments:
How so many people voted for Bush is mind-boggling. An absolute disaster. This is a tragic day for our planet and for all of us, wherever we live.
Raymond Perrez, Toulouse, France
I just woke up to find Bush in the lead. I feel physically sick. I wish I could go back to bed and get up in another four years.
Sarah, Brussels
Today, I wish Soviet Union never disintegrated and there would have been some balance still in this world.
HA Qureshi, Islamabad, Pakistan
Guardian Comments:
Let's kill off all of these rightwing loonies and their offspring! Oh, wait we need slave labour. After all, we need white trash to give us a competitive advantage for our manufacturing sector! Conservative Aushwitz anyone?
Perhaps I will get really lucky here and half of the republican population of Indiana will get killed because they are nothing but KKK remnants and German american WW2 sympathizers, whom somehow get unemployment and welfare.
Now I am afraid, very afraid. Will Bush start persecuting people for their beliefs, above and beyond the patriot act? Will their be interment camps for dissenters? All of this is possible.
Its Nazi history all over again these CATO-Rove-Bush quizlings has followed the script of Hitler and his fascist gang and taken America

CNS News Boston: A distraught woman confronted a Democratic congressman in a hotel, screaming, "Can you tell me why everybody made a mistake?"
George Soros on if Bush won: I shall go into some kind of monastery to reflect. ... I will be asking what's wrong with us.
Mark Karlin: Slightly more than half of the citizens of this country simply do not care about what those of us in the “reality-based community” say or believe about anything.

I promised that I'd write...and I didn't. However, I do have some excuses for not posting. First, I've been horrendously busy; this is a good college with a tough workload (and no, the two do not always go together). Second, I was persuaded by one of my good friends to join College Republicans, so I don't feel nearly as politically isolated. On the other hand, I've become even more aware of the bias on campus.
CR is planning to increase activites now that the election is over, so my blog is going to shift focus quite a bit. There's going to be a conservative newspaper, and we're going to start submitting more articles to the political journal that comes out once a month. I'm planning on writing for both of these, but I've never been a huge fan of just writing things and saving them on my computer, so I'll publish articles or parts of articles here.
My first topic: common Democratic reactions to the election, and why they're stupid. Fun! Look for some quotes fairly soon.

So, I haven't written for about a million years...
I'm about to go to bed, but just a couple of things...I'm taking Andrew Sullivan off of my blog list--I'm disappointed in him!--I'm formally registered as an Independent/Non-declaring voter in my home state; the trip to Beijing was amazing and I'll be posting about it sometime later; I'll also have things to say about the elections, the Memogate scandal, and some political philosophy. I'll also be going back to the original idea of this blog, i.e. whinging about stupid liberals on my campus. Fun times are ahead!
To hold over my (nonexistent) readers until I have time to write, I submit this story. Anyone who knows anything at all about blogs and the Memogate fracas will find it hilarious, I guarantee it. (Hat tip to Little Green Footballs)

I'm not going to make any jokes...
It's just too easy.
I'm officially crossing Ohio off of my list of 'states I would consider living in', along with Illinois.

No China stuff, sorry
I've been busy packing and reading anime reviews--yay anime reviews! I'm debating between buying Serial Experiement Lain, Noir, or Trigun next. I haven't seen Lain but I really want to--I've seen Noir and Trigun and love them both. Decisions, decisions...I may have to start posting actual anime reviews here as well.
Anyway, my reason for posting is this article. If you don't feel like reading the artice, short version: the U.S. Olympic Committee is telling U.S. athletes going to Athens for the 2004 Olympics not to wave the American flag when they win or during award ceremonies--because it will make other countries upset over our 'jingoistic' ways.
I swear, just when I think I've read the last word in ridiculousness, something new comes up...
Anyway, if you want to express your annoyance/outrage/incredulousness to the U.S. Olympic Committee, you can email them. I just did, actually; I suggested that they just go all-out and tell our athletes not to win. If a flag can anger other nations so much, after all, the actual victory that prompted the flag's display will outrage them much more, yes?
Hat tip to Lawrence Simon for the article and Michele for the email address.

It's been a while...
but between finals, being a finalist for this fellowship and therefore heading down to D.C. for an interview, and gettng ready to actually go to Beijing (I'm leaving tomorrow, actually), I've been pretty busy.
So, just a few links that caught my attention...
Read this. Then read it again. It's important. (Hat tip to VodkaPundit and Pejman.)
The point made in this article is unfortunately all too true. Note that more people are actually getting into and going to college then are prepared for it. Even at my school (and it's a pretty good school, if I do say so myself), one of my good friends and I often compare notes on how bad other students' writing is. While they aren't lacking in basic reading skills at least, you'd think that all of the students at one of the top liberal arts schools in the country would be able to get a point across in writing.
Color me relieved that I didn't go to U of Chicago--as Right of the Rainbow pointed out, "Policy note to Illinois state legislators: having made yours laws inhospitable to the practice of medicine, expect a decrease in the practice of medicine."
On the topic of 'things I am relieved about', thank goodness I didn't apply for those internships in the NY legislature. That's just freakin' creepy. (Another hat tip to Right Side of the Rainbow, who is getting put on my b-list immediately on the theory that getting two interesting links from him is a good sign.)
Maybe tomorrow, between packing and going to graduation, I'll post some stuff on China. I'll try to update a couple of times while I'm in Beijing--if anything happens in Tiananmen Square on June 4 (the 15th anniversary of the 1989 protests!) I'll be sure to write about it, and take pictures.
Now I'm going to turn on some music or something, because a really annoying guy down the hall has started talking really loudly. This guy, I'll call him Eric, is one of my pet peeves; he knows nothing about international affairs (for instance, he thought he could get away with telling my left-wing Canadian friend that she 'wasn't really an international student' because 'Canada's not different from the U.S. at all'--this to the girl who had never heard of the real reason behind the 2nd Amendment!) but he thinks he's a genius. As an IR major, he annoys the hell out of me.
Music to drown him out--now!

Before I get down to work...
Here's a few links.
This is so true. Goodness knows I'm all for tolerance, but demanding tolerance for one group while being hostile to another that deserves equal respect is the rankest hypocrisy.
Another interesting parallel, and one that I hadn't thought of before. The guy's got a point (wow, two good NYTimes editorials in one day!) However, there's a larger lesson to be learned than the one he draws. It's certainly important to note that we need to examine our assumptions of why any hostile group of people got the way it did (whether it be Harris and Klebold or Hamas) in order to rehabilitate those we can, not to mention avoid getting more enemies. However, when we're under attack, it really doesn't matter how they got to where they are in their heads--we need to defend ourselves. Israel's a good example. Asking Israel to put conciliation of various Islamic terrorist groups ahead of its national security, as so many are demanding today, is akin to asking a student at Columbine HS to walk up to the shooters, arms outstretched, and ask them why they're shooting people. We might admire someone who did that (especially if it worked) but we would never demand such action. Why do people expect Israel to do exactly that?
This is both true and quite funny.
And now, China:
Great, just f***ing great. Just what I wanted to hear three weeks before I leave for Beijing. And considering we only heard about how bad SARS was last year because of a rogue doctor who leaked it to the international press, this admission is fairly disturbing.
Also, wow. Investment in some areas went up over 90% last year and the rate of inflation is 12% a year and they're not sure it's a bubble? I think the leadership of the CCP in general is so concerned with China's growth in all areas to have a realistic opinion of the dangers here.
China is stepping up its security for the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. I'll be there on June 3rd and 4th, actually, and it will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens.
On a side note, why is it that so many protests happen in China around the same time of year? There's the May 4th movement, the 1976 Tiananmen incident (late April) and the crackdown in 1989. Odd.
I'll talk more about this editorial later.
And filed under the 'what else is new' heading: China's Military Buildup Causes Concerns In US.

Huh
One of my good friends may be working for Grassroots, Inc. this summer--they had a table at the Student Union today with advertisements "Beat Bush". I actually saw the table (I went to the Student Union to check my mail after class today) and I was so tired and annoyed, since I spent all night writing a paper, that I was strongly tempted to go over and start ranting at the guy at the table. I resisted, however, and even kept myself from arguing with my friend (I'll call her Katrina for future reference); after all, that's what this blog is for, right?
She said that she's looking forward to it because she'll actually have reasons to dislike Bush, rather than just thinking he's stupid. Personally, I think it's a bit backwards to have an intense hatred of someone and then go out and find reasons, rather than disliking someone with cause, but whatever.
In any case, there's no guarantee that she'll get actual information about Bush. Goodness knows advocacy groups in general do not keep themselves very firmly within the 'truth and nothing but the truth' framework--and yes, I include many conservative groups in that category.
The thing that I was keeping myself from ranting about is that the Democratic Party and all of its cooperating groups seem much more focused on 'beating Bush' rather than 'electing Kerry' or, heaven forbid, 'presenting issues' or 'proposing solutions'. Frankly, if they lose, I think that'll be a big reason (and Bush is currently leading in the polls). Voters, especially at this time, want issues, and Kerry's flipflopping is hurting is credibility more than even mildly unpopular stands would. Or at least that's how I see it.
One interesting thing is that I can't find Grassroots, Inc. on the web anywhere; there's a Grassroots, Inc. that's based in this state (New York) but nothing national, and the thing that Katrina's looking at is definitely national. Interesting...
Update: I actually found the website after a lot of searching; it's here. Obviously a new website, as half of the links from the main page are 'coming soon. It's pretty straightforward about what it's planning to do, although I find it ironic that the stated goal on the top of the site is to build grassroots support for progressive candidates, but their only goal, again, is to 'Beat Bush', not 'Elect Kerry'. In fact, Kerry's website isn't even up on the 'Links' page. I'm only assuming they're rooting for Kerry, in fact, because they say they're trying to sign up more Democrat voters and doners. Also, their plan is to identify 30,000 new Democratic donors a month until Election Day. That's 180,000 people, so it's definitely about money, not actual grassroots campaigning. Love the distribution of offices; two in Mass, two in Connecticut, one in RI, PA, and NJ, as well as one in DC, 5 in Cali, one in Vermont, two in New York, one in Chicago, Ann Arbor, Seattle, Santa Fe, etc. Only two in the entire southeast, Atlanta and Miami. Yep, it's definitely about money; otherwise they'd be focusing on swing states, not California (although who knows after the recall thing) and the northeast. I'm still not sure why Katrina wants to do this, though. I know she's quite liberal, but this is poli-sci summer job material, not writing and classical studies. Eh, whatever. Hope she has a good time.

Wow
Interesting perspective...
Everyone and her idiot brother has heard about the Gorelick thing, right? Well, maybe not, but I don't have the energy to write about it. Cliff Notes: woman who, working for the Clinton administration, basically wrote the rule (memo) about the 'wall' between law enforcement and intelligence agencies, is on the commission who's supposed to find out where the blame lies for 9/11. Conflict of interest, anyone?
So, here's a very interesting article about the hearings and how Ben-Veniste's actions reflect on their credibility. Not one that I would have thought of, but perhaps that's because I don't have time to watch the hearings and hadn't heard about these insane conspiracy theories being thrown around.
